Quality health care has been a key focus of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), the largest referral hospital in Eastern and Central Africa with a bed capacity of 1,800. To enable it achieve its mission of “a world class patient-centred specialised care hospital”, the GIZ Health Sector programme (HSP) has been partnering with KNH to implement quality management programmes. To further strengthen this collaboration, the GIZ HSP organised a visit to KNH by a member of the European Union Parliament, Mr. Arne Lietz, on 22nd July 2016. This visit accorded Mr. Lietz an opportunity to interact with the areas of GIZ HSP support to KNH, enabling him to understand the effectiveness of the German Development Cooperation’s technical support to the health sector to improve quality of health care. Mr. Lietz sits on two critical committees, that is, Foreign Affairs and Development that play a key role in development assistance from the European Union.
The GIZ HSP has been collaborating with KNH to improve quality of maternal and neonatal health services through: strengthening capacity on quality improvement with a special emphasis on maternal and neonatal health services; fostering international collaboration with German teaching universities thereby promoting learning; building the capacity of the Risk and Quality Department in carrying out their mandate of ensuring quality health care; provision of equipment to enhance the capacity for health care delivery; and provision of short-term and long-term expertise for the above areas of collaboration.
The insights from this visit will be critical in informing and strengthening future collaboration and technical support towards improving the quality of health care at KNH and the health sector in general.2016-10-18
